Subgrade / Subjugate is a mixed media work built with paver sand to evoke the density and resistance of concrete. The surface is compressed and uneven, resembling infrastructure rather than image — something walked over, built upon, or buried beneath.

The piece reflects the heaviness of competing wills: what remains hidden because it is deliberately contained, and what remains because it is forcibly held down. Texture becomes a record of pressure — not expressive, but imposed. The black surface absorbs light unevenly, emphasizing depth and weight rather than movement.

Here, concealment is not reverent but structural. What exists beneath the surface is unresolved, not erased. The work sits in the tension between endurance and submission, where material holds what cannot be released without collapse.
